Dust, timber and quiet light — each room cleared a little further.

In the mountains of Tōei, Aichi, a kominka about 130 years old is finding its next life. Kamiya House — owned by Shem and Mari Booth-Spain — is being brought back by many hands: not only to keep a building standing, but to make a place where people can learn, make, and one day cook & share a table.
We own the building. The fields and forest around it are not ours.
We are honoured to care for this house — a piece of local history — and we believe stewardship means tending it carefully, with patience and respect for what came before.

Every cleaned floorboard, shared skill and careful repair is part of the story. The making is not a means to an end — it is what brings us together.

We’re learning as we go: clearing, repairing, reusing, finding traditional skills and new ways to work together. There is still a long way to go — and that’s part of the point.

Practical repair days: tools out, patience in.

The house sits in Tōei — we steward the building, not the fields beyond.

Future spaces — not bookable at Kamiya. Day visits by arrangement; nights at Kura next door.

A professional kitchen and shared table are the long vision — only after food-service licensing. No dining brand name until then.

Next to Kura Retreat Daikokuten. Building owned; surrounding fields and forest belong to others.
Gathering is already part of the work: hands in the house, skills shared, meals when we can. Pop-up cooking and a communal table grow after the food licence — until then, the warmth is in the company and the craft.
